Skateboard Park at Otaki

The Skate board park and it's location in Otaki has become a very hot topic. The Otaki Community Board had made a decision in the last Trienium to locate the park near the Otaki Surf Club using the old Basketball courts.

The Kapiti Youth Council had called a meeting for Wednesday evening the 12th December and invited the Community Board as well as parents and others interested parties. The meeting was held at the wharenui (food hall) building at Raukawa marae and attened by about 50 people. It was an excellent meeting run by our youth.

Some other locations identified include, Cnr of Mill Road and Anzac St where the Rahui training sign is located, The car park behind the library, the site where the old grandstand was located in the domain, by the Information Centre on the SH1

The following were some other locations that were suggested at the meeting from the workshops that were held.

Basketball Courts by the Otaki Surf Club

This was the preferred location by the Community Board based on cost and being owned by council.

The meeting higlighted a number of issues with this site including safety issues coming down Tasman Road with 100km speed zone, Shells dropped on the ground by seagulls, no phone or food nearby, transport issues getting to and from the beach form the township.

This was considered by the Community Board but it's future was unknown as this building and car park could be sold. It had many attributes that the youth wanted including the location near the town and access to the amenities and shop's, phones etc. It may eventuate that this may be used temporarily until a final site is selected

This last photo was another option as it is council owned land is next to a recreation centre including soccer, tennis and squash courts as well as the swimming pool. The biggest issue here may well be the soil that are peat like and the cost associated may be prohibitive.
